Diluted ethanol has the best antiseptic effect at a concentration of 70%. As the concentration increases, the antiseptic effect weakens. Antiseptic action is achieved by denaturation of cell membranes.
It is also used to disinfect work surfaces, instruments and skin.
Ethanol claddings are used to reduce elevated body temperature.
Ethanol is used as an antidote for methanol poisoning, because by competitive inhibition it prevents the conversion of methanol to formaldehyde and further to formic acid.
